How to change your CarPlay startup sound
CarPlay doesn't have a "startup sound" setting. What you can do is have your iPhone play a sound the moment CarPlay connects, using a Shortcuts automation. Here's how on iOS 27.
What you need
- An iPhone on iOS 27 and a car with CarPlay (wired or wireless).
- A sound to play. Either use an app that provides a "play sound" Shortcuts action, or a short audio file in the Files app.
Steps
- Open Shortcuts, then tap the Automation tab at the bottom › +.
- Choose the trigger CarPlay › Connects. It's far down the list, so type CarPlay in the search bar at the top. If it's missing, check Settings › Screen Time › Content & Privacy Restrictions › Allowed Apps and make sure CarPlay is on.
- Turn on Run Immediately and turn off Notify When Run. Otherwise you'll get a tap-to-run banner instead of a sound.
- Add your action. In Dashtone it's Play Car Moment Sound › CarPlay connects.
- Connect CarPlay to test it.
Things that are normal
- Apple's chime plays first. CarPlay's own connect sound can't be turned off; yours plays right after.
- A short delay (about a second, more if the phone is locked) is iOS starting the automation.
- Music: a well-behaved sound lowers your music while it plays, then brings it back. If yours plays on top of the music, the app isn't asking iOS to "duck" other audio.
